In 1887 – just 20 short years after Confederation – the two-person law firm of Henderson and McVeity first opened its doors for business in Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario.
The fledgling firm quickly established a strong reputation as a leading authority in intellectual property, and before long, expanded its practice to offer innovative business law and advocacy services.
As the country grew and business diversified, so did the Firm, building a pre-eminence in all of Canada's key industries including: energy, financial services, government, infrastructure, manufacturing, life sciences and technology.
Today, the Firm – now known as Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP – encompasses more than 2,000 people, including more than 700 legal professionals, in offices across Canada, and in Beijing, Moscow and London.
While much has changed since the early days, the partnership's consistent and passionate devotion to excellence and client service continues to make us one of Canada's most trusted law firms.
Over the years, our people helped shape the history of our nation. From facilitating the building of the Confederation Bridge to the passing of landmark Canadian privacy and trade acts, Gowlings' professionals have always been sought out for their creativity, effectiveness and value.
Today, our professionals appear regularly before the Supreme Court of Canada and continue to provide intellectual property, business law and advocacy services to both companies and governments in Canada and abroad.
