We have a career opportunity for an Applications Specialist within our Information Technology Department to work within a team environment. Based in the Ottawa office, the successful candidate will aid in application installation, configuration and integration of software.


The incumbent's responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing end-user support for all standard applications and proprietary programs used by the Firm. Providing second level support to the help desk technicians on these
  • Providing technical support to the Systems Administrator to ensure the proper configuration and operation of all standard applications and proprietary programs in a networked environment
  • Installing new software, upgrades and maintaining current versions of software
  • Ensuring compliance and consistency with software as used in other Gowlings locations
  • Assisting the Application Trainers in the development of training programs and documentation relating to new applications
  • Collaborates with internal or external IT Programmers, as required, to achieve desired development/integration outcomes
  • Leads or participates in key projects and collaborates with various departments across the Firm and project sponsors to determine project scope and vision
  • For approved projects, gathers requirements, writes specifications, designs, builds, tests (quality assurance), and implements and supports business facing tools and applications
  • Understands business requirements and drivers. Researches and evaluates multiple options (Commercial, Open Source, and/or Propriety) and presents supported recommendations to stakeholders
  • Supports and maintains Business Systems, Tools, and coordinates with the Infrastructure team
  • Understands application API’s and databases to support, integrate and monitor performance
  • Available on an as needed basis to provide coverage for certain core business systems that require high availability. This may include off hours support to facilitate production cutover and software upgrades


  • College diploma in Computer Science
  • Four years of experience in a similar capacity
  • Experience with Commercial Software implementation, configuration, development and customization
  • Experience with Internet Applications and supporting languages such as Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, VB.NET
  • Intermediate (minimum) understanding of SQL to retrieve and update data
  • Architecture and Integration experience would be a strong asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other Firm members, with the aptitude to take care of  clients’ needs in a professional and courteous manner
  • Capacity to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Solid background in the use and support of standard business applications, specifically in the legal environment
  • Produce a high quality and quantity of work product, occasionally under tight timelines
  • Able to prioritize and to redefine priorities when necessary
  • Handle stress in a business-like manner
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Team or project lead experience is considered an asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset
