Gowlings a big winner at Managing IP’s Annual Awards Gala

May 28, 2010

Gowlings won in two categories: Patent Prosecution Firm of the Year and the Copyright Case of the Year at Managing Intellectual Property’s (MIP) recent awards gala in Washington D.C.

Judy Erratt, a partner in Gowlings’ Ottawa office, accepted the Patent Prosecution award on behalf of the Firm. The award reinforces Gowlings’ well established position as one of the leading intellectual property (IP) firms in Canada. MIP has also ranked Gowlings as a tier-one practice across all areas of IP for 14 consecutive years. Members of Gowlings’ Patent Prosecution Group regularly lecture at universities and training workshops, speak at conferences and publish articles on matters relating to technology-specific issues in patent protection.

Robert MacDonald & Douglas Fyfe, also partners at Gowlings Ottawa, accepted the Copyright Case of the Year award for the Firm’s involvement in the SOCAN//NRCC/CSI Satellite Royalties case. The ruling saw the Canadian Copyright Board expand the available royalties for recording artists to specifically include performances on online music services like Sirius and XM Satellite radio.

At MIP’s annual awards gala, more than 40 awards were presented to leading firms across North America in patent, trade-mark and copyright work as well as special awards for outstanding IP practitioner, lifetime and outstanding achievement.
