Toronto, ON – July 1, 2011 - Gowlings is delighted and pleased to welcome Paul Harris as a partner in its London office.  A leading litigator with more than 25 years experience, Harris joins Gowlings Dispute Resolution and IP team, practising in IP strategies and disputes.

“Paul is a terrific addition to Gowlings, and will help grow our IP practice in London,” said Scott Jolliffe, chair and CEO of Gowlings. “This is another step in developing Gowlings’ London office as part of our integrated service in IP strategy and dispute resolution. With present counsel James Tumbridge and recently joined senior policy adviser Richard Heath, we now have the key members of a team that can offer clients a new insight in to their IP issues.”

With a stellar reputation, Harris has been involved in a number of high profile IP cases. He successfully defended Black & Decker in important patent litigation, the outcome of which lead to the Patents Court guidelines on experiments and expert’s reports. In trademark and passing off matters, he handled the renowned Wagamama case, which was the first major case to consider the UK Trade Marks Act 1994 and its implementation of the European Trade Marks Directive. Also known for his confidential information practice (particularly the taking of trade secrets and databases by ex-employees), Harris handled the Dyson v Strutt litigation, relating to misuse of confidential information, and recently First Conferences v Bracchi

On his decision to join Gowlings, Harris said “The opportunity presented by Gowlings to help build, with James and Richard, a practice looking at IP in a unique way, was too exciting to miss. Understanding the needs of clients, and anticipating them before they do, is the type of cutting edge advice we will be offering.”
