David Aylen is the resident managing partner of Gowlings’ Moscow office. With a 20-year history in Russia, Gowlings’ Moscow office is one of the top rated prosecution and litigation firms in intellectual property law.

David is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in Intellectual Property (trade-marks, patents and copyright), having received that designation in 1998.

David is extremely active within the intellectual property arena. He is a regular committee member within the International Trademarks Association (INTA), the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). He is also a member of the Ontario Advocates’ Society and was a member on its Committee on Intellectual Property Litigation for several years. In addition, David was an active member on the Intellectual Property Litigation Committee for the Canadian Bar Association which at the time founded the annual Federal Court Judges Dinner.

In 1999, David was appointed by INTA to the Board of Governors for the Brand Names Education Foundation (BNEF) where he served a three-year term. In 2009, he was elected by INTA as a Vice-Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.

Presently, David is the only INTA-certified ADR expert for Russia.

In 2009 he became an active member in CERBA, the Canadian Eurasian Russian Business Association.

His notable achievements in intellectual property litigation include acting as co-counsel in the well-known “patent diaper wars” between Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble as well as the “telecommunications wars” in Canada and the United States between AT&T, MCI and others on the subject of the pioneer patents for 800 and calling card services.

David's most recent success includes an infringement action upheld in favour of his client by the Federal Court of Appeal, in respect of electric fireplace technology.
