Michael Polowin is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office, practising in the areas of municipal and planning law and commercial real estate, and is the leader of Gowlings’ National Municipal Law Group. In his municipal and planning practice, Michael advises and represents clients through the full spectrum of the development process. He has acted for some of the largest developers in Canada, and has been involved in developments throughout Ontario, appearing in Court and at the Ontario Municipal Board.
Michael also has extensive experience in development-related agreements, including subdivision and cost-sharing agreements. Michael also acts in expropriation matters, and has acted on behalf of municipalities in Eastern Ontario on planning and development and public-private partnership matters. He has also written extensively on municipal and planning law matters.
In his real estate practice, he advises financial institutions and property owners on the acquisition, disposition and financing of real property in Ottawa and throughout Ontario. He has acted with respect to some of the largest and most complex real property transactions in the Ottawa area, including sports arenas, power centres, office complexes, residential developments and public-private partnerships, both for government and the private sector.
Michael has practised law in Ottawa since 1985, and has been involved in the leadership of community organizations, and has served on the Committee of Adjustment. He regularly appears on radio and television discussing municipal issues, and for a number of years wrote a column on such matters for the Ottawa Citizen. Michael has been listed in Best Lawyers in Canada since 2010 for both municipal law and real estate law, and has been listed in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory since 2014 for Development Law.
