Peter Murphy is a partner in the Business Law Group, working out of Gowlings’ Toronto office. His practice has a special focus on technology and privacy law.

Peter’s technology law expertise includes the negotiation and drafting of joint venture agreements, supply, development and distribution agreements, technology licences, maintenance and support agreements, outsourcing agreements and financing arrangements. Peter has acted for many technology industry clients, including AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), on a wide variety of technology law matters.

Peter’s privacy law expertise includes defending clients from privacy breach complaints and investigations by Canada’s Privacy Commissioner, advising clients on compliance with privacy laws including conducting privacy assessments, drafting privacy-compliant contracts for complex business and financial transactions, and preparing corporate privacy policies.

Peter has extensive experience acting for clients in the energy industry. Peter advises Bruce Power LP on intellectual property and information technology matters and on a variety of service, fuel and equipment supply agreements. Peter has acted for Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation in its renegotiation of power purchase agreements with independent power generators, and has advised major wind and solar power developers on project financing and service agreements relating to their wind and solar development.

Peter’s unique experience in energy and technology law has been recognized by the Province of Ontario. Peter was invited to act as part of a multi-disciplinary team of top legal advisors drawn from a number of major law firms to advise Infrastructure Ontario and the Province of Ontario on their selection of a nuclear technology vendor. As part of this legal team, Peter advised on the negotiation and drafting of Infrastructure Ontario’s nuclear procurement RFP documentation and the agreement to be entered into for Ontario’s planned development of a two-unit nuclear power plant with a capacity of up to 3.5 GW.

Peter also has extensive experience advising not-for-profit companies on a wide variety of legal matters including corporate governance.

Prior to joining Gowlings in 1999, Peter gained extensive experience in commercial law, including secured financing, mergers and acquisitions and real estate at the Toronto office of another of Canada’s largest national law firms. Prior to entering law, Peter spent a summer working as a computer programmer in the business risk analysis department of the Ontario Share and Deposit Insurance Corporation.
