Robert Armour is senior counsel in Gowlings’ London office and member of the Gowlings International Strategic Advisory Group (GISAG). Robert has extensive experience working for international clients, particularly in the power sector particularly in nuclear, coal, renewables and electricity networks.

GISAG was formed to provide a strategic and business complement to the Firm's already impressive legal capabilities, advising clients at the highest level on their international business needs. The group provides advisory services in the areas of corporate and business strategy, industry and organizational restructuring, government relations and lobbying, government restructuring and regulatory regime development, regulatory affairs, public policy strategy development, financing, international financial regulation, corporate governance and security advice, and planning and risk management.  Working seamlessly with other Gowlings professionals, Robert and other members of GISAG help clients to manage risk and extract value in high-stakes international deals or multi-country expansions.

Robert was previously General Counsel and Company Secretary for British Energy Group plc. where he played a central role in the C$25 billion takeover of British Energy by France's EDF, one of the biggest recent M&A deals in Europe. Robert is currently coordinating the sale of EDF Energy’s UK electricity distribution businesses.

Robert began his career as a solicitor with Haldanes McLaren & Scott WS in Edinburgh before it merged with Wright Johnson & Mackenzie, where he became a partner in 1986. He worked at Scottish Nuclear as Company Secretary and legal adviser from its creation in the industry restructuring in 1990 and played a leading role in its merger with Nuclear Electric and its privatization as British Energy in 1996. As General Counsel of British Energy, then the UK's largest electricity generator, he played a critical role in the Company's UK and overseas acquisitions as well as the restructuring when the company nearly collapsed in 2002. The restructuring has since proven to be one of the most complex financial restructuring programs in U.K. history.

Having stayed with British Energy throughout its turbulent history from flotation to acquisition by EDF, Robert was a key member of its Executive Committee and played a crucial role in the company's restructuring, turnaround and subsequent sale.
