(Disponible en anglais seulement) Seanna Callaghan is a partner in Gowlings' Toronto office, practising administrative law and commercial litigation, with an emphasis on regulatory matters, environmental law, product liability and contract disputes.
Seanna's product liability and environmental law practice focuses on the defence of product liability and land contamination claims arising under the myriad of environmental regulation, focused largely in the area of fuels regulation and fuels safety. In this regard she manages and defends all of the Ontario based litigation for a major oil company in regard to its home heat and retail assets. Related to this, she regularly acts on behalf of her clients in their dealings with the industry regulator, namely the TSSA, in ensuring compliance with its regulatory scheme and standards.
Her regulatory practice also includes professional liability representation; namely in the health professions. She advises several statutory committees at two health colleges regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act (“RHPA”). In this regard, she acts as independent legal counsel to a discipline and fitness to practice committee as well as a board of inquiry. This role requires her to provide legal advice during the course of regulatory proceedings and/or investigations, which requires a detailed understanding of the RHPA, administrative law principles and practices (e.g. jurisdictional challenges, procedural fairness doctrines) and evidence law.
Seanna's practice also includes tobacco product liability claims.
She joined the Firm in 1992 as a summer, then articling student, and has continued her practice at the Firm since that time. Throughout her career to date, she has appeared before all levels of courts in Ontario as well as numerous administrative law panels.
