Alan Butcher is a partner in Gowlings' Hamilton office practising in commercial and insolvency litigation.

Alan has a broad range of experience in litigating disputes between commercial parties and asserting the rights of creditors both within and outside the insolvency context. His litigation expertise includes enforcement of all forms of security, receiverships, priority disputes, shareholder rights and remedies, professional liability, commercial fraud, cross-border disputes, commercial lease remedies, economic torts, actions involving the duties of lenders and financial institutions, recovery of personal and real property and the collection of judgments.

Alan’s clients range through the entire business spectrum, from financial services to manufacturing, import and distribution, real estate investment and development and including the representation of individuals in these contexts.

He is an experienced advocate at all levels of the judicial system, including motions, applications and trials in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and on appeals before the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Alan has been with Gowlings for many years, spending approximately 12 years in Gowlings’ Toronto office before relocating and continuing his practice in Hamilton. Within the firm, Alan has developed a particular expertise and as co-chair of the E-Document Management Committee for Commercial Litigation NPG, has played a national role in the utilization of litigation technologies and electronic discovery tools and strategies.
