Brian Crane is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office. A senior member of Gowlings' Advocacy Law Group, he practises in constitutional, administrative and aboriginal law. Brian appears as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court and the Ontario Courts. He has also worked extensively in the negotiation of native land claims and related litigation, and commercial arbitration and mediation.
Brian has chaired Canadian Bar Association Committees on Reform of Parliament, the Federal Judiciary, Reform of the Federal Court, the Supreme Court of Canada and the Reform of Civil Justice.
Prior to joining Gowlings Brian served as a foreign service officer with the Department of External Affairs. For 15 years he acted as consultant for the Law Reform Commission of Canada and has consulted for various other government departments since 1980.
He was appointed Queen's counsel in 1977 and a certified specialist in Civil Litigation in 1988.
Brian has lectured at the University of British Columbia.
Brian (with co-authors Robert Mainville and Martin Mason) recently authored the text, First Nations Governance Law (Markham, ON: LexisNexis Canada, 2006). He is also co-author of Supreme Court of Canada Practice (Carswell) with Henry Brown.
