Constance Sugiyama is a senior partner in Gowlings' Toronto office.
Connie has more than 30 years of experience advising domestic and international businesses on a broad range of complex and innovative matters with a focus on corporate finance, M&A and corporate governance. She also has unique expertise serving the health care industry.
Connie is a past member of Gowlings' National Executive Committee (2005-2007). She led the Firm's National Corporate Finance, Securities and Public M&A Group, comprised of more than 100 members from 2002-2007, and has contributed significantly to the growth and development of this practice.
Prior to joining Gowlings, Connie was a partner of another major Canadian firm where she led their National Securities and Mergers and Acquisitions Law Group.
Representative transactions of public record include:
- Advising Virgin Group in the establishment of Virgin Mobile Canada, Canada’s first mobile virtual network operator
- Debt financings for a number of Ontario universities
- Advising the Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Financing Authority (formerly OMEIFA) in connection with its initial offering of more than $300M Ontario tax-exempt bonds and the issuance of $500M short-term promissory notes.
- Acting as legal counsel in the merger of two public hospitals and a $281M public bond offering for Canada’s largest teaching hospital, Toronto Hospital (University Health Network), a first of its kind transaction.
