Grant Tisdall is a patent agent in the Toronto and Waterloo Region offices. Grant is a Toronto leader of the Firm's Technology Industry Group and a member of the Firm's Clean Technology and Financial Services Industry Groups. Grant oversees the recruitment program of summer and articling students at Gowlings for the Toronto intellectual property department.
Grant is registered with both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He advises his clients on the strategic global aspects of intellectual property and assists in coordination of their R&D activities through building and managing of intellectual property portfolios for their first/next generation technologies. He guides technology companies in developing customized innovation programs that best formalize their intellectual assets in alignment with their business direction.
Grant is actively involved in international procurement of patents and industrial designs, focussed on preparing and prosecuting patent applications relating to computer software and application development, hardware and software requirements of mobile computer products including antennas, enterprise solutions including electronic check (Check 21) and insurance claim processing, business methods including social media networks, clean technology including lighting controllers and silicon device manufacturing and presentation/operational aspects of graphical user interfaces (GUI).
In addition to international procurement, Grant works with business owners to provide strategic advice and opinions on patentability aspects of their technology, freedom-to-operate considerations for their technology and litigation support concerning patent infringement and validity issues. He also conducts intellectual property due diligence for commercial transactions. Grant's past activities include:
- Overseeing development and implementation of an innovation program and resulting patent portfolio for a global company in advance of their next generation technology release for rugged mobile computing products and support systems.
- Conducting patent mining sessions for a large multinational telecommunications company resulting in a worldwide patent portfolio of 300+ patents and patent applications for mobile software development and deployment tools.
- Coordinating freedom-to-operate investigations for a Canadian company in advance of releasing mobile workforce management applications via a large U.S. carrier.
- Conducting infringement investigation and patent portfolio valuation analyses for a leading Canadian company in preparation for an intellectual property asset sale.
- Preparing IP due diligence materials in advance of sale by a Canadian company of their international patent portfolio on fibreboard production technology to a wood-based panel division of an international group of companies.
