Hugh Christie is a partner in Gowlings' Toronto office and past Toronto leader of the Employment and Labour Law Practice Group.
Hugh provides commercial and public sector clients with advice on employment law. His areas of specialization include the design, interpretation and application of employment policies; compensation packages, including option and incentive plans; and disciplinary issues. Hugh deals with employment issues arising out of restructuring of the workplace as a result of corporate transactions and trans-border employment issues. He also advises on terminations and post-employment obligations.
Hugh has spent his entire career at Smith Lyons LLP, now Gowlings, first as an articling student, and then as an associate. Hugh is co-chair of the Advisory Board of a Centre for the study of Labour and Employment Law at the Faculty of Law, Queen’s University, the only such Centre in Canada. He is also a member of Canada’s delegation representing Canadian employers to the International Labour Organization, an agency of the United Nations.
A qualified arbitrator, Hugh is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and regularly sits on boards of arbitration.
Hugh is a past member of the board of The Advocates’ Society.
Hugh has lectured at the Law Society of Upper Canada, instructed at its Bar Admission Course, and lectured at the Canadian Bar Association, The Advocates’ Society, the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario, the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association and various universities across Canada, including the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.
