Ikuko Wada is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office. A registered patent agent in both Canada and the United States, her practice focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications for computer-related inventions and telecommunications.
Prior to joining Gowlings, Ms. Wada spent three years as an engineer for a Japanese manufacturing company,
researching the electro-magnetic characteristics of floppy disks, and spent two years with a patent attorneys firm in Tokyo, where she drafted new patent applications and responses for
filing with the Japanese Patent Office in the field of liquid crystal displays and
semiconductor devices.
Ms. Wada qualified to practice as a patent attorney before the Japanese Patent Office in 1990. Subsequently, she was employed as a registered patent attorney
with a patent attorneys firm based in Tokyo, preparing responses to foreign office actions in the
automotive field and the area of recording devices. She qualified as a patent agent in
Canada in 1995 and was awarded the J. Edward Maybee Prize for the highest standing in
patent agent examinations. In 1997 she spent the year with a patent agents firm in London gaining valuable experience in European patent practice.
