Jack Yong is a partner in Gowlings' Vancouver office, practising corporate and commercial law. He is leader of Gowlings’ China and East Asia Initiative, Chief Representative for the firm in Beijing and co-chair of its Technology Industry Group in Vancouver. Jack provides his clients with strategic counsel in diverse areas of business law.
Jack has experience in broad aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, financings, partnerships and joint ventures across a range of industries, including technology, software, clean technology, manufacturing, professional services, real estate, resources and forestry. Jack has acted for investors and companies in angel and venture capital financings, technology licensing transactions, co-development agreements and strategic alliances, and manufacturing and distribution arrangements.
Jack has also been involved in real estate development, acquisitions, dispositions, construction management leasing and financing matters. He has worked closely with clients on subdivisions, multi-unit residential and mixed-use developments, industrial and commercial leases, property management and expropriation.
In the above and other areas, Jack has assisted many clients from outside Canada. He has helped many foreign companies and investors establish businesses, invest, acquire assets and enter other types of commercial transactions in Canada. He has also assisted Canadian companies in structuring, negotiating and documenting business transactions outside of Canada.
Jack is proficient in written Chinese and spoken Mandarin and Cantonese, and is able to deliver legal services in both English and Chinese.
In 2011, Jack was seconded as Canadian counsel to a leading law firm in China with over 1,000 legal professionals. In this capacity, Jack spent three months in Beijing working with the firm’s cross-border transactions team. His work included a complex acquisition totalling $2.4 billion on behalf of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group.
