James Buchan is a partner located in Gowlings' Toronto office. James is Gowlings' National Practice Group leader for Trade-marks and a former co-leader of Gowlings' National Practice Group for Intellectual Property Litigation.

As a barrister and solicitor, James' expertise in the IP field is broad-based and extensive, covering a wide range of IP-related contentious and non-contentious matters. James' practice is principally focussed on trade-mark portfolio management and prosecution as well as litigation involving patents, trade-marks and copyright matters. James has appeared as counsel of record in more than 25 reported decisions of the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, and has been counsel in over 750 trade-mark opposition and expungement proceedings before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

James is active in numerous national and international IP committees and industry groups, currently acting as vice-chair of the Competition Law Committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.

James is also committed to pro bono work, and is one of Gowlings' co-ordinating partners for Pro Bono Law Ontario.
