Jane Steinberg is a partner in Gowlings’ Ottawa office and member of the Firm's Intellectual Property Group. Jane has 30 years of experience in contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters. Her practice specializes in trade-marks and domain names and encompasses litigation, prosecution and mediation.
Jane appears before the Federal Court of Canada, provincial courts and the Trade-marks Opposition Board. She has extensive experience in negotiating licenses and other agreements, conducting intellectual property audits and providing freedom to operate and validity opinions, as well as strategic advice on intellectual property portfolios and anti-counterfeiting. She is also on the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center’s List of mediators and arbitrators and on the INTA Panel of Neutrals.
Since joining Gowlings in 1980, Jane has enjoyed leadership roles within the Firm, including serving as National Firm Managing Partner, External; Intellectual Property Department Head (Ottawa); and the National Leader of the Firm’s Life Sciences Industry Group. She has also served on the National Executive Committee for many years and chaired the Firm’s National Taskforce on Women. Jane is one of the two editors of the two volume, loose-leaf publication, "Life Sciences Law in Canada". First published in 2006, this text is updated twice a year and is the leading life sciences text in Canada. Jane is also one of the primary authors of "A Practical Guide to IP Issues in the Pharmaceutical Industry", covering laws in Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, and published in 2007 by the European Intellectual Property Reporter.
