Jay Zakaïb is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office. The primary focus of Jay’s practice deals with patent litigation, mainly in the life sciences, material sciences, and agrifood industries, with particular emphasis on patent litigation for innovative pharmaceutical companies.
Jay has litigated the listing of patents on the Patent Register, and the enforcement of listed patents in Notice of Compliance proceedings. He has handled a variety of trade-mark litigation cases, and has advised several brand owners on enforcement issues for their trade-marks.
Jay also advises clients on managing patent prosecution and regulatory requirements to secure appropriate patent enforcement. He is currently advising clients about protection of medicines with a focus on requirements for securing patent protection for biologics and the requirements for approving subsequent entry biologics (SEBs).
Jay practises in both English and French. Jay has written and spoken on intellectual property issues in numerous settings, and has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Law for the University of Ottawa, teaching introduction to intellectual property and patent law for several years. He has given lectures and represented clients before the Courts in both official languages.
