Jeffrey Oliver is an associate in Gowlings' Calgary office, practising in corporate restructuring and insolvency law. Jeffrey also practises in the area of commercial litigation.
Jeffrey routinely acts for lenders, landlords, purchasers, debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, directors, as well trustees, receivers and monitors. He advises clients on corporate reorganizations, bankruptcies, receiverships, foreclosures, lease realizations and loan workouts, including on cross-border insolvencies and realizations.
Jeffrey is currently the only Western Canadian that has been named a Fellow of INSOL International. INSOL is a worldwide federation of national associations for accountants and lawyers who specialize in turnaround and insolvency. This designation is in recognition of Jeffrey's expertise in cross-border insolvency matters. Jeffrey's corporate restructuring practice is extensive and includes representing key stake holders in a variety of different economic sectors, including:
- Representing CNOOC Limited in its US$2.1 billion acquisition of OPTI Canada Inc. pursuant to the CBCA and CCAA.
- Representing secured creditors and stalking horse bidders in the receivership of WellPoint Systems Inc.
- Representing secured creditors in the CCAA proceedings of Jung Developments Inc. and Western Express Airlines Inc.
- Representing purchasers of assets in CCAA proceedings of A & B Sound.
- Representing unsecured creditors in the CCAA proceedings of BA Energy and Westbay Sonship Yachts and bankruptcy of North American Steamships Ltd.
Jeffrey's representative insolvency engagements include:
- Representing trustee in bankruptcy of Phytogen Life Sciences Inc. and proposal trustee in New Home Warranty of British Columbia Inc. and Desmarais Energy Corporation.
- Representing secured creditors in receiverships of SQFive Intelligent oilfield solutions and JW Auto Group.
- Representing liquidator in Winding-Up and Restructuring Act proceedings of Commonwealth Trust Company liquidation.
Jeffrey's representative commercial litigation work includes:
- Representing minority shareholders in litigation involving oilfield parts supplier.
- Representing financial institutions in a variety of mortgage fraud related actions.
- Representing co-owners of a large parcel of land on Savary Island, British Columbia in a contested action to partition the property.
- Representing a municipal government on Vancouver Island in successful defence of a $100 million claim for damages arising out of breach of contract and economic torts.
- Representing plaintiffs and defendants in various contractual and other disputes.
