John Doherty is a partner in Gowlings' Waterloo Region office practising in civil litigation, with a focus on commercial and municipal litigation.
In his commercial litigation practice, John is an advocate before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court and Court of Appeal for Ontario. In addition, John's municipal litigation practice leads him to appear before municipal boards and councils, and a variety of administrative tribunals including the Ontario Municipal Board with a focus on municipal, planning and expropriation matters.
John has spoken on a variety of topics relating to the law of expropriation, including the annual case law update at the 2011 Ontario Expropriation Association Annual Conference and on Mediation at the Ontario Municipal Board .
John served as the managing partner of the Waterloo Region office and a member of the national executive committee of the firm from 1999 through 2009. John recently co-authored an article with Roberto Aburto appearing in the February 2012 edition of Briefly Speaking, the Ontario Bar Association magazine. The article is entitled “What a Nuisance: The Debate of Nuisance Law in Ontario” discussing the recent decisions of the Ontario Court of Appeal on the law of nuisance.
