John McKernan is the national risk manager in Gowlings' Toronto office.

John has over 40 years’ experience in the insurance and risk management community where he has worked as a property/casualty underwriter, an insurance broker and account manager with a large multinational insurance brokerage and risk management firm in Toronto. He provided insurance brokerage services, claims and risk management advice to clients in the manufacturing, automotive, construction, and engineering, food, plastics and technology industries.

John was manager, risk control and advisory services, in the Risk Management and Insurance Services Group of the Province of Ontario. In this capacity he provided services to the various Ministries, agencies, boards and commission, which included contract review, RFP risk identification, loss analysis, alternative risk transfer models and insurance program development, costing and implementation.

He has been a speaker on insurance topics such as product liability, professional errors and omissions coverage, construction insurance and environmental liability insurance. He was an instructor at the University of Toronto, Continuing Education Studies, in their Risk Management courses.
