John Norman is a patent litigation lawyer in Gowlings’ Ottawa Office. Dr. Norman has extensive experience in patent litigation including patent infringement actions and proceedings under the Patented Medicine (Notice of Compliance Regulations). He regularly appears before the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal on patents relating to pharmaceutical products. In addition, he regularly advises clients on effective patent portfolio management and litigation strategy.
Dr. Norman is an active member of the Canadian IP bar including an affiliate of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. He is also a member of the IPIC Biotechnology Patent Committee as well as a committee member and member of the Editorial Board for the Canadian Intellectual Property Review. Dr. Norman is also a member of the Orphan Products Working Group with BIOTECanada.
He is a frequent speaker and writer on pharmaceutical patent litigation matters, including Subsequent Entry Biologics. Recently, he was recognized as a leading industry expert on patent issues at the 8th Pharma Patents Conference and participated as panelist on the “Pharma Patents Roundtable: Synthesizing the Latest Legal Development into your Patent Strategy”. In addition, Dr. Norman has been nominated for the Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 in Canada.
Prior to joining Gowlings, Dr. Norman obtained a PhD in biochemistry with a specialization in genomics, gene expression and molecular biology from the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.
Dr. Norman represents a wide range of clients including leading national and international innovative pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies such as, Eli Lilly, Hoffmann-La Roche, Bristol-Myers-Squibb and Kyorin.
