Julie-Martine Loranger is a partner in Gowlings’ Montréal office and former head of its advocacy department from 2000 to 2007. Her practice focuses on commercial, civil and securities litigation, dismissal of executives, class action, construction law, insurance and professional liability such as that of engineers, architects and various stakeholders of financial services, as well as directors’ liability.
Since 2001, she has been a member of Montréals' office Management Committee. On August 10, 2009, Julie-Martine was appointed as a director representing the consumer within the Board of Directors of the Chambre de l'assurance de dommages by Minister of Finance Mr. Raymond Bachand, for a three-year mandate.
Julie-Martine has acted before courts of all jurisdictions including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Québec Court of Appeal, the Superior Court and various regulators, arbitrators and mediators. Julie-Martine has acted in the following class action matters:
- representing and acting for banks and credit lessors in class actions involving allegation of misrepresentation, fraud / scheme and breach of the consumer protection legislation. She was involved in contesting certification of class action up to the court of appeal level and in negotiation of various settlements;
- representing two financial institutions in a class action with respect to financial product offered as creditor proof which turned out the be seizable;
- representing financial institutions in relation with IPO and secondary market claims;
- acting for financial institutions that lent money to investors for purpose of various leverage investments;
- representing directors (D&O) and obtained a discontinuance of class action proceedings for alleged failure of their duties as directors;
- representing pharmaceutical companies (manufacturers and distributors) in product liability class action. Some allegations were related to failure to disclose and to warn about risk, defective product and false advertising;
- acting on behalf of a computer company defending product liability, breach of consumer protection legislation and contestation with respect to arbitration clause;
- defending recourses based on false publicity, breach of consumer law;
- advising on environmental class action;
- advising mutual fund distributor in market timing class action proceedings.
Julie-Martine regularly speaks on liability, ethics and compliance issues to investment advisors, representatives from various financial institutions, lawyers and insurers. She has taught attorneys on advocacy and evidence techniques at a seminar hosted by the Canadian Bar Association and also coaches various financial advisors on how to manage their business and protect themselves, as well as teaching branch managers and compliance officers on their duty to supervise.

Furthermore, Julie-Martine has authored numerous articles published in Finance et Investissement, a newspaper distributed to the brokerage industry in Québec, and has co-written a paper on investment advisor’s liability for the Canadian Securities Institute’s continuing education program. At Gowlings, she is editor-in-chief of the newsletter Above Board @ Gowlings (and of its French version, Conseils Avisés @ Gowlings) and coaches various members of financial institutions on professional liability issues. Julie-Martine also provides expert advice through articles she authors for lesaffaires.com.
