Leila Burden Nixon is an associate in the Financial Services Group in Gowlings' Toronto office where she practises in the areas of banking, restructuring and business law (general corporate and pensions).
Leila acts for both lenders and borrowers in secured lending transactions, including syndicated financings, subordinate debt financing, acquisition financings and refinancing; for servicers to CMBS loan portfolios; and for receivers and secured creditors on insolvency matters, including commercial mortgage enforcement. Her corporate practice focuses primarily on pensions and benefits, where she has acted for trustees and administrators of pension plans in connection with surplus entitlement, drafting of plan documentation and mergers and acquisitions.
Leila has also had the pleasure of gaining valuable insight into the operation of financial institutions as in-house counsel while on a 10-month secondment with one of the Firm’s largest banking clients.
- Acted for a syndicate of lenders lead of CIBC and BMO in connection with a $915 million syndicated bridge facility for the acquisition by Borealis Infrastructure Health of the MDS labs business and for a syndicate of lenders lead by DEPFA Bank plc in connection with the long term refinancing of such bridge facility.
- Acted for New World Gaming Partners Ltd. (a company owned by Macquarie and Crown on a 50/50 basis) in connection with a financing of its takeover bid of Gateway Casino Income Fund, certain subsidiaries of Gateway Casinos Inc. and Star of Fortune Gaming (B.C.) Corp. (enterprise value of approximately $1.37 billion).
