Ms. Béland joined Gowlings in 2005. She practises in the financial services sector with a particular emphasis in the fields of lending, real estate and restructuring.
She acts for both financial institutions and other creditors as well as debtors, with regard to Canadian and cross-border corporate and real estate financing, and also within the framework of restructurings. As such, she has assisted in the drafting and the negotiation of loan agreements, intercreditor agreements, forbearance agreements, as well as the establishment of moveable and immoveable security. Moreover, she acts on behalf of trustees and creditors by studying securities within the framework of their realization. Ms. Béland has a particular expertise on documentary credit. and has written her master’s thesis on the subject, entitled “The Commercial Letter of Credit: an Outdated or Misunderstood Credit Facility ?”. She is also specialized in the farm credit sector.
While studying for her degree, she performed a one-year internship with the Honourable Judge Pierre Dalphond at the Court of Appeal.
She practises law in English and French. Marie-France has a particular expertise on documentary credit and has written an article on the subject, entitled “La lettre de crédit commerciale : facilité de crédit désuète ou incomprise?”.
