Mark Ledwell is the managing partner in the London office of Gowlings, practising in the areas of business and financial services, with particular emphasis in project finance and investment banking. His practice areas also include energy, mining, infrastructure and construction matters.
Mark has over 25 years of experience acting for a broad range of clients in the financial services, energy, mining and infrastructure/construction industries. He has advised and negotiated numerous mergers and acquisition transactions as well as significant financings of projects, businesses and assets in various industries and countries around the world. Additionally, Mark served as general counsel to a private industrial group of companies based in Canada for eight years.
Mark also has industry experience in a number of sectors, including construction, mining, forestry, agri-food, waste management, steel fabrication, machining, transportation and manufacturing. 
- advised on financing, deal structure and project agreements for a major renewable power generation facility in Ontario;
- advised on project finance and development of a mine in Canada for a China-based client;
- advised Eastern European governments on foreign direct investment in energy, mining, construction and infrastructure sectors;
- advised foreign governments on free trade negotiations in Canada;
- lead counsel in investments by major food company in Canada, UK and Europe;
- advised pension funds in infrastructure investments in Canada and UK;
- counsel in supply managed Canadian dairy and poultry industry challenges;
- counsel to several Chinese companies in foreign direct investments in Canada, US, UK and Africa;
- developed a joint venture involving SNC-Lavalin Inc. for the development of the Trans Canada Highway in New Brunswick;
- advised on financing and deal structure for the Trans Canada Highway Project in New Brunswick, recipient of awards for financing and innovation by the Canadian Council for Public Private Partnerships;
- advised on project agreements for the finance and construction of the Deh Cho Bridge over the Mackenzie River at Fort Providence, Northwest Territories;
- advised on project agreements for the finance and construction of wind farms in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec;
- negotiated major supply and services contracts in Canada’s Athabasca Oil Sands, including CNRL (Horizon), Suncor (Voyageur), Albian Sands (Muskeg River and Jackpine), and Petro-Canada (Fort Hills);
- developed a joint venture for site development at Vale Inco Processing Facility at Long Harbour, Newfoundland;
- advised on project agreements for construction of hydro power generation facilities at Waskwatim, Manitoba, for Manitoba Hydro;
- negotiated equipment manufacture and supply agreements for manufacturing and construction industries;
- advised and implemented re-organization of lumber manufacturing facilities in Canada and Sweden;
- negotiated services contracts for mine developments remediation in Quebec, Newfoundland and Nunavut;
- developed joint venture for the development of Canada’s largest compost facility located in New Brunswick;
- represented Canadian potato growers in actions against Government of Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
