Edward (Ned) Levitt is a partner in Gowlings’ Toronto office. Ned has over 30 years experience practising franchise and distribution law.
He is often quoted in the media, and has appeared on several television programs, including CTV's W5, CBC's Venture, CHCH TV's Let's Talk... Franchising, Channel 47's Business Insight, and Report on Business TV.
Ned is past general counsel to the Canadian Franchise Association (2000-2007).
Ned is a prolific writer, having published numerous books, papers and articles on franchise and distribution law. He is the author of Canadian Franchise Legislation, published by Butterworths Canada Ltd. He is contributing editor for the "Franchise, Licensing and Distribution" chapter of O’Brien’s Encyclopedia of Forms and for the "Distribution of Goods and Services" chapter of Canadian Forms and Precedents, published by Butterworths Canada. Ned was the consultant and a contributor to Franchising: a Complete Guide for Canadian Buyers and Sellers, published by Key Porter Books.
In addition, Ned has written a regular franchise column for Ontario Business Magazine and has contributed articles to Canadian Business Magazine, Toronto Business Magazine, The Franchise Voice (published by the Canadian Franchise Association), the American Bar Association’s Franchise Law Journal, the International Bar Association's Journal of Franchising and Distribution Law, Ontario Restaurant News, The Bottomline, Franchise and Distribution, published by Federated Press and Opportunities Canada.
A noted lecturer, Ned has spoken at numerous seminars on franchising and distribution matters conducted by various organizations, including the Canadian Franchise Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the International Franchise Association, the Schulich School of Business, the Ministry of Industry Trade and Technology, The Federal Business Development Bank, George Brown College, the University of Guelph, University of Toronto's Small Business Consulting Service, McGill University, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Retail Council of Canada, the International Union of Lawyers, Insight Seminars, the New York Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Canadian Institute.
