Peter Lukasiewicz is the managing partner of Gowlings' Toronto office and a member of the Firm's Internal Management Committee. He is a senior commercial litigator who counsels and represents domestic and global clients in respect of complex commercial disputes.
Peter provides strategic advice to senior management and in-house counsel with respect to litigation risk and represents clients in the execution of their litigation strategy. He has acted as counsel in numerous trials and represented clients in the negotiation, mediation and arbitration of disputes before private mediators and arbitrators.
As the Toronto managing partner, Peter spearheaded the Firm’s merger in 2001 with Smith Lyons LLP, creating the largest office of any Canadian law firm. Prior to assuming the duties of Toronto managing partner, Peter was the head of the Toronto litigation department from 1995 to 1998.
From 1985 to 1986, Peter was on a leave of absence from the Firm in order to serve as Chief of Staff to the Attorney General for Ontario.
Peter holds the designation of ICD.D as an Institute of Corporate Directors certified director. Peter's ongoing and recent representative engagements include:
- representing Canada's largest telecommunication company in litigation and arbitration matters in Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba;
- counsel to one of the global record labels which is a defendant in a class action brought by rights holder of songs published in Canada;
- counsel to Toronto Community Housing Corporation in respect of the class action arising from the fire at 200 Wellesley Street East, Toronto;
- representing a national mutual fund company in defence of claims asserted by an investment management company;
- defeated a motion for a multi-million dollar interlocutory injunction in Winnipeg, Manitoba and secured the dissolution of an interim injunction;
- successfully overturned an adverse trial decision in the Ontario Court of Appeal and now prosecuting an action for a mortgagee challenging the expropriation of a large commercial property;
- defending a leading brokerage firm in investor actions launched under the provisions of the Ontario Securities Act.
