Pierre Pilote is a partner in Gowlings' Montréal office. He practises in the area of labour and employment law.
Pierre represents and advises the management of various corporations especially in matters related to labour relations, occupational health and safety, collective agreement decrees and contracts of employment. He pleads both before administrative tribunals and the regular courts of law particularly in grievance arbitration matters and on issues falling under the purview of the Commission des lésions professionnelles, the Commission des relations du travail, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board and the Commissaire de l’industrie de la construction. He represented an intervening party in connection with the enquiry commission related to Société Papier Gaspésia.
Pierre also acts as a negotiator and as such, has represented the Québec government in the negotiations that led to the adoption of the Act respecting the representation of family-type resources and certain intermediate resources and the negotiation process for their group agreements (Bill 49). He also acted as spokesperson for the Québec government in the negotiations that led to the adoption of the Act respecting the representation of certain home childcare providers and the negotiation process for their group agreements (Bill 51).
He was also chief negotiator for the Québec government in 2009-2010 in the context of the negotiations of the public and para-public sectors concerning 500 000 employees. These negotiations resulted in the signing of a five-year agreement.
He has developed expertise as a strategic adviser to the senior staff of private companies and serves in this capacity to the senior staff of governmental and para-governmental organizations.
He was also senior adviser to the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, the President of the Treasury Board and Canada’s Minister of Finance (1990-1993). As such, he contributed, in particular, to the reform of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the reform of the Pharmaceutical Patent Protection Regime (C-91).
Over the past few years, Pierre has been a speaker on several occasions. He has been a member of numerous boards and associations, among which: Aéroports de Montréal, Centre d’entrepreneurship HEC-Poly-UdeM, the Canadian Unity Council, Verdun General Hospital and Association des diplômés de l’Université de Montréal.
