Robert MacDonald is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office and leader of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group.
Robert holds over 30 years of experience in all trade-mark areas, including prosecution, licensing, oppositions and litigation in the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal. He specializes in assisting clients with clearing, protecting and enforcing their brands in the Canadian market.
Robert is known for taking a collaborative, team-based approach to the delivery of legal services. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) as a Specialist in Intellectual Property Law (Trade-marks), and also served on its Committee for the Certification of Specialists in Intellectual Property.
As a leader in his field, Robert consistently achieves recognition in prominent rankings guides. He is listed in Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business 2013 for Intellectual Property, and is one of only 30 trade-mark professionals worldwide to be included in Expert Guides: Best of the Best 2013.
Robert is also ranked as a top trade-mark professional in the World Trademark Review 1000, which identifies the world’s leading trade-mark professionals through extensive qualitative research. Within the publication’s 2012 and 2013 editions, he is described by his clients and colleagues as:

Robert’s insight is frequently sought as a speaker at events held by the LSUC, as well as other prominent groups such as the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). He is an active member of various organizations and is currently the Chair of the Intellectual Asset Management Team within MARQUES, the Association of European Trade Mark Owners.
Since its inception, Robert has served as a lecturer for the Advanced Practical Trademarks Course offered by McGill University and the IPIC. He also shares his expertise with others by regularly contributing articles to a variety of professional publications.
Previously, Robert served on Gowlings’ National Executive Committee and was Managing Director of the firm’s Moscow office.
