Sean Murphy is an associate in Gowlings’ Calgary office, practising in the area of global business integrity, encompassing international anti-bribery law and foreign corrupt practices.
Drawing from his commercial law background, and operational and project management experience in the resources industry, Sean regularly assists clients in complying with Canada’s Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act (“CFPOA”) and other anti-corruption regulations.
Prior to joining Gowlings, Sean developed experience working in the engineering departments of energy and mining companies. This has provided him with insight and exposure to a wide variety of commercial and operational issues relevant to industry. Anti-Corruption

- Advising in relation to The Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act (CFPOA) in legal matters involving disclosure, jurisdiction, defence and sentencing
- Anti-corruption compliance program development and implementation across a wide spectrum of industries and company sizes, including a company with over 8,000 employees
- Anti-corruption law and compliance program training for employees, agents, contractors, executives and board members
- Developing procedures for complex areas of anti-corruption compliance, including: gifts, travel, meals and entertainment of public officials, the handling of facilitation payments and effective tools for agent due diligence and ongoing monitoring
- Detailed operational risk assessments for over 25 countries around the globe
- Drafting agency agreements for business development in foreign locations
- Advising on CFPOA contractual provisions for service, supply and distribution agreements
- Anti-corruption representations and warranties in M&A transactions
