Susan Tandan is a partner in Gowlings’ Waterloo Region office. She is an experienced patent agent registered to practice in both Canada and the United States. Since qualifying to practice in 1992, Susan has held positions in private practice as well as in-house with a research-based biotechnology company.
Her practice focuses on providing services and advice relating to patent protection, both locally and internationally, particularly with respect to life science technologies, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, chemical, gene and protein-related technologies, diagnostics, agricultural, clean-tech and medical devices. She works with a broad range of clients including research-based organizations such as universities, hospitals and government, as well as industry clients at various stages from start-up to established business.
Susan is a member of Life Sciences Ontario and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).
She has published a number of articles, and speaks regularly on topics relating to patent protection.
- November 23, 2010 - participated in a panel discussing IP Strategy and Proof of Concept at the Life Sciences Ontario Technology Transfer Summit North America.
- November 2010 - presented a seminar on Strategies of Patenting to faculty at University of Waterloo's School of Pharmacy.
- July 12, 2010 - guest lecturer at at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo on Strategies for Protecting Intellectual Property.
- September 23, 2009 - speaker at TechAlliance Sink or Swim event regarding Cost-effective IP Protection.
- October 13, 2009 - guest lecturer at the University of Waterloo on Strategies of Protecting Intellectual Property.
- April 29, 2009 – presented a talk entitled Protecting Green Technologies at a Green Technology Seminar hosted by Deloittes and Gowlings in Kitchener.
- November 12, 2008 – presented a talk entitled Protecting Cancer-Related Technologies at a meeting on Advancing Cancer Care at McMaster University.
- July 24, 2008 – presenter in a 1-day BioTalent workshop on Biotechnology Patenting for the Stiller Centre in London, ON.
- November 26, 2007 – presented a talk on Patenting in Life Sciences at Robarts Research Institute.
- September 21, 2006 – presenter in a 1-day workshop on Patent Protection in Biotechnology for Robarts Research Institute.
- Authored Patenting Strategies for Early Stage Technology in the Spring 2004 edition of BioBusiness.
- Presented workshops on Patenting in Biotechnology through the Biotechnology Human Resources Council (BHRC).
