Thomas has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, and the Superior Courts of the Provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and Nova Scotia. In addition, he has appeared before many administrative tribunals, including the Ontario Securities Commission, the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Chartered Accountants Institute, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Ontario Human Rights Commission and other regulatory agencies.

Thomas was an instructor in the Ontario Bar Admission course for 16 years and was a lecturer for three years on trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School. He is the past president of the Administrative Law Association of the Canadian Bar Association and has lectured on topics involving computer law and products liability, particularly related to pharmaceutical products.

Prior to joining Gowlings, Thomas practised with two other law firms; the first following his call to the Bar in 1970, the second he joined as a partner in 1988.
