Tell your friends

DEADLINE: May 31, 2012 - Good luck!

Canada's biotech industry is dynamic and exciting. Car seats made of renewable soy foam,  high efficiency medical devices, innovative therapeutic treatments, and fuel from oilseed crops — these are just a few examples of the major role that biotech plays in our daily lives.

Which area of biotechnology research do you find most exciting? In your view, what's the coolest new biotech development or discovery in Canada?

In conjunction with National Biotechnology Week, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP invites you to participate in our BIOTECH ESSAY CONTEST. Submit your 1,500 word essay by May 31, 2012 on your choice for "Canada's Top Biotechnology Story of the Year." The development or finding you report on must occur or have been recognized as a notable advance in an ongoing study within the period of June 1, 2011 to May 30, 2012.

Winners must be entering a life sciences-related field at a Canadian post-secondary institution to be eligible. Essays will be judged by a panel of industry experts.

First place: Susie Youn (Old Scona Academic, Edmonton) for her essay, Cellular Alchemy: Breakthroughs in Canadian Stem Cell Research. Susie is attending the University of Alberta's BSc program with a major in Biological Sciences in the Fall.

We touched on stem cells during biology class this year and the topic really piqued my interest. Luckily for me, it turned out that Canadians have made great progress in the field of stem cell research and engineering. This fall I'll be studying at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Science, where I hope to one day major in biological sciences.

Second prize went to Amanda Doggett (Kelvin High School, Winnipeg) for Magic at McMaster: Dr. Bhatia's discovery in turning human skin cells to blood cells.

I've always loved the idea of helping people through breakthroughs and innovation in science, so writing about Dr. Bhatia's research was a great experience. I look forward to looking deeper into the field of genetics when I am at the University of Waterloo over the next four years and I also look forward to following the advancements in that field, and maybe one day be a part of them.
- Amanda Doggett, second place winner

Third place was awarded to Emma Maione (River East Collegiate, Winnipeg) for Canadians Make a Global Advance against the Scourge of Malaria.
