WHAT WE DO

ENERGY

Gowlings' Energy Group knows nuclear. Mounting concerns on the availability and security of energy supplies have created renewed interest in nuclear power. As supply mix concerns grow, the balance between generation types will continue to be explored. As an efficient means of producing base load power, nuclear generation will continue to play an important role in future supply options.

Members of Gowlings' Energy Group acted on the first private sector acquisition of a nuclear power plant in Canadian history and have been actively involved in the day to day legal and regulatory issues encountered by Canada's largest nuclear power plant. The Group also acted as counsel in the complex negotiations relating to the restart and refurbishment of four units at the power plant.

Gowlings' knowledge of the nuclear sector goes beyond a deep familiarity with the operational aspects of nuclear generation. Our professionals have acted for Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization, advising on radioactive waste management and nuclear non-proliferation obligations in relation to spent nuclear fuel management. The Group has also acted for licensees in the decommissioning of various types of nuclear facilities and for applicants for new build nuclear facilities before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
