Dr. Ian Colton is a registered Canadian Patent Agent in Gowlings' Ottawa office, practising in the area of patent prosecution with an emphasis on originating patent drafting in chemistry, biochemistry and broadly related fields.

Ian's doctoral studies focused on developing a chemical model for p-type ATPases, and on examining the enantioslectivity of Candida rugosa lipase towards esters of chiral carboxylic acid esters. The nature of the research performed for his MSc degree involved developing a method for the diastereoselective synthesis of 4-methyl prolines based on intramolecular radical cyclizations of chiral substrates. In his postdoctoral work at Harvard University, Ianstudied electrostatic interactions in biological systems using capillary electrophoresis.
